Ohio Buckeye

Aesculus glabra

Native to eastern North America the Ohio buckeye is a medium sized tree with a mature height of up to 40’ and a spread of up to 35’. Like other buckeye species the leaves are palmately compound, but the Ohio buckeye has only 5 leaflets. Unlike the yellow buckeye the husk has a prickly appearance.  Ohio buckeye is also referred to as stinking or fetid buckeye because the leaves and twigs give off an unpleasant odor (skunk-like) when crushed.
